EBTP Work Group Members

Criteria for WG Selection

The Membership of all Working Groups is periodically reviewed, and applications for membership are welcome from experienced biofuels stakeholders. Please e-mail your C.V. to secretariat@biofuelstp.eu, together with a short message summarising your motivation for joining a particular WG. Your details will then be forwarded to the relevant Chair for approval.

Further information on the selection process for WG membership is presented below.

Several hundred people responded to the original invitation on the Europa website, asking people who wished to become active in the Working Groups of the Technology Platform to express their interest by completing a registration form.  All completed requests were collated by the Secretariat and assigned to possible WGs and these lists discussed at a formal meeting held in December 2006, at which short lists of possible invitees were drawn up on the basis of selection criteria set by the Steering Committee as follows:

  • The technical competence of individuals based on their professional profile.
  • Their individual commitment to the work involved.
  • Expected technical support from company or institution, company profile and formal commitment to allocate adequate resources to the task.
  • Individuals and their company or organisation should be recognised as having previously made significant contributions to the development of biofuels for transport, through (for example) contributions to BIOFRAC, R&D activites and scientific or technical publications.
  • A diversity of country representation from EU25 [now EU27] is to be attempted, since biofuels issues reflect significant regional and sectorial differences.
  • There should be only one expert per company/institution and WG [ammended 2010, please see a1-2010 below].
  • Numbers should be manageable with a proposed maximum of 25 people per WG, with the Chair able to consult with or co-opt specific individuals on a one-off basis if the need arises [ammended 2010, please see a2-2010 below].

In general the appointment to the WGs is a personal appointment. However, since the activity is offered on a voluntary basis and will involve an investment of time and effort, membership also reflects the interest and support of the company or other organisation involved.

To reflect the evolution of the Technology Platform and to enable wider involvement from stakeholders, the following ammendments were made to WG membership conditions in 2010.

a1-2010 Where there is a valid benefit (for example, expertise on a specific topic) more than one person from an organisation may be allowed to join a WG, at the discretion of the Chair.

a2-2010 Given rapid developments in the European biofuels industry, and the move towards greater use of online tools for communication, the maximum limit of 25 WG members has been lifted. This enables a greater number of stakeholders to directly share their expertise and viewpoints on feedstocks, sustainability, conversion technology, end use and market development.

In August 2012, following a consultation, WG4 and WG5 were combined in a new group WG4 Policy and Sustainabilty. This reflects the vital importance of sustainability as a cross-cutting issue that is fundamental to the production and use of all biofuels, and the commercial development of advanced biofuels in Europe.
